Robo's real name is Prometheus. I might be way off, but I believe Squaresoft (or now, Square Enix) or the Mother Brain named him after the Greek mythological titan, Prometheus. According to Ancient Greeks, Prometheus stole the fire of the Gods and brought it to the human mortals without any permission from Zeus, the king of Gods. When Zeus discovered this betrayal, he punished Prometheus by eternal torture: Everyday, Zeus's eagle would come for the imprisoned Prometheus to eat Prometheus's liver, and every night, Prometheus's immortal body will heal the eaten liver and wait for the eagle's return. I find that Robo's role in Chrono Trigger has many similarities with this Titan.

When we first meet Robo, he joins the Crono and Co. as their future time tour guide since Crono and Co., Crono, Marle, and Lucca, are all from the Present. Turning on the electricity in the factory to open a door to a time warp, Robo gives the Crono and Co. "fire". By cooperating with humans, Robo also has betrayed his fellow R series and is punished mercilessly for his actions. Then, during a side-quest, Robo discovers that his creator, the Mother Brain, queen of all the R series, has created a factory that aims to destroy the human race. Aided by his human friends, Robo stops her, and in doing so, betrays his old lover and old friends.

Therefore, in his many missions, Robo represents the role of the emancipator or help giver for humans during their time of need, resembling the Prometheus, the fire giver. He betrays the Chrono Trigger's Zeus, the Mother Brain. Mother BrainŐs servants, the R series, whom represent the eagle, punished him for his betrayal. Robo has saved and assisted countless times the human mortals, or in Chrono Trigger's case, Crono and Co. However, unlike Prometheus, Robo overruled his creator and is happy with his life after his betrayal.
